Jobsearching: Resumes – Don’t Lie

We’ve been going through cover letters and resumes for summer internships. This spring, we were pulling resumes and covers for a social media coordinator at Blaze.

Here’s a tip: Do not oversell yourself. Do not write things down on your resume that are lies or exaggerations. If you are a graduating senior in college, I do not believe you would be an account executive material without agency experience.

Just.don’t.do.it. Don’t lie.

Here’s another tip: Read instructions. When we ask for cover letters, there’s a reason. As a PR firm, the team needs to know you can write… and write well.

One more tip: Learn the differences between:

  • your and you’re
  • they’re, their, and there
  • its and it’s
  • who’s and whose

Meet-up of SM folks in PR – Recap

Happy 2011! I’ve been tweeting but not keeping up with this blog as well as I should be.

Last month, I reached out to a few women who worked in PR and social media. I wanted to meet more people like me – people who were social media types and worked in PR firms. A few weeks ago, we met up in Culver City.

Social Media and PR peers - Jan 2011

Left to right: that’s me, Laura from Fleishman, Christina & Christina & Heidi from Murphy O’Brien, and my colleague Shone from Blaze. We’re missing Tiffany from Wunderman.

We talked about clients, tools, and the dynamics in managing clients’ programs within a PR framework. I had such a fun time meeting these women. I feel like I have my own peer group now; even if we’re working in competing firms, there is plenty of work for everyone. (At least I believe so.)

I’m hoping to find a few more peers in Orange County and meet up with Tiffany again. If you are a social media manager or PR/social media hybrid account executive who works at a PR firms in OC, please let me know! I’d love to meet you.

Tweet-up: SM Folks who work in PR Firms

Happy Hour

It occurs to me that I don’t know many social media folks who work in PR firms… IRL. Let me back up – I still consider myself a PR newbie. It just so happens that I ended up specializing and working on clients’ social media programs within a PR firm. How lucky am I?! I get to learn more about traditional PR and increase my social media arsenal.

So I tweeted to a few folks in the LA area and voila – instant tweet-up coming at ya during the first week of January. I’m thinking Monday January 4th or Tuesday January 5th. I like Bar Chloe in Santa Monica as it’s not that loud (read: you can actually hear each other).

I’ll post the date, time, place soon enough!
